Not intentionally of course. All the sushi places recommended in the book were closed as it is Sunday so we took a chance on Bunke. We sat at the bar so could see the cooking action. We ordered our meal - sashimi, grilled fish, rice and beer.
All good so far and then they gave us the surprise - a brown thing smelling of fish. We asked what it was - tuna. We both chickened out on eating it until we saw the guy sat next to us tucking into his. In for a penny in for a pound. It tasted really good and we were so proud of ourselves for eating it. Until we saw the cleaned fish carcass on our friends plate and realised we'd only eaten probably half of it!
Oops, never mind, our sashimi had arrived by then and that was delicious. Even better was the grilled marinated sable fish - I think it is known as black cod at home. Then we topped it off with nodoguro (black throat sea perch).
The address for Bunke is 1-7, Kiguramachi, Kanazawa. Look out for the red fish on the signage outside.
